The voices of Newburgh

Voices from Newburgh telling stories about our long running transport travails. They were gathered from a town-wide survey done 8 years ago, interviews conducted in 2023 and again in 2025 and pupil drawings taken from a competition held last year.

The story hasn't changed much this last decade.. Buses continue to be unreliable and infrequent. Some detail the problems posed by not having a train station and others speak of what a difference having one would make.

"You can't go into Perth late at night nor to Edinburgh, in fact no where really. You can't get back to Newburgh after about half past seven. I would go to more public events if there was more public transport. A train station would bring more people into Newburgh."

It isn't much fun being in the middle of nowhere, somewhere between Perth, Dundee. Yet we are only an hour from Edinburgh by train from Ladybank!

..I can't run a car as I am a student

"I rely on buses far too often. Access to the cities and beyond via a train station makes so much sense it's ridiculous that this has not come about sooner".

Newburgh citizen say: "It [public. transport] is not great if you're working. If you want to go out to Perth for a drink, it is not very good at all. A train station would let me go further afield and it would bring people in to Newburgh, and have a look around the town."

"It's difficult. The buses stop at 7.30 in the evening. We are at the start or end of the Fife Coastal Path it should be easier to get to and from here! So it isn't very useful for a place well located between Perth, Dundee an hour from Edinburgh, but where transport figures on the list of spending priorities, I don't know.

No public transport at the moment that can get me home from my work as a nurse when on a late shift can't get into work on sundays and as for social occasions need a taxi to get home after 8pm sad but true

"I've used the 36 bus. It's a shame it doesn't run after seven. It is impossible to get back from anywhere. You must make other arrangements which is a bit of a hassle. I have a car but I would prefer to use public transport for local journeys."

Newburgh citizen states: "Public transport is poor, You want to go out to Perth you have to come back earlier which is not good. My daughter lives in Dundee. For her to get back she must go to Ladybank and catch a train or go to Perth and catch a bus. It's not easy at all. If we had a station in Newburgh I would use it to visit my daughter in Dundee, my son in Glasgow and go off the Edinburgh. I would use it all the time."

Newburgh citizen state: "A train station would open things up. Tourism would improve. People would actually come to the town. It would give people the opportunity of moving to the town and for more people from the town to work further away from the town. It seems bizarre there is a railway right through the town but nothing stops."

I have two young children so taking the bus. It can be very stressful. The journeys are

long even if we are going somewhere very closeby. There aren't enough regular buses or buses that take more direct routes. I also find them a bit costly.
